The first Iran-Uganda Joint Agricultural Working Group Meeting was held with the aim of strengthening economic cooperation, bolstering bilateral ties and implementing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked between the two countries.

Iranian chairman of Iran-Uganda Joint Agricultural Working Group Saeed Hosseini pointed to the background of cultural and economic relations between the two countries, stating that agriculture can serve as a strategic gateway to achieving sustainable growth and prosperity and increasing the economic resilience of Iran and Uganda.

Iran and Uganda have high potentials to promote bilateral cooperation in the trade and agricultural fields, he said, adding that Uganda, with its vast arable land and production of organic products, and Iran, relying on its technological capabilities, knowledge-based knowledge, and successful experiences in the fields of horticulture, dairy industries, transformation industries, and processed products, can establish a balanced and beneficial trade relationship with each other that will contribute to the economic growth and food security of the two countries.

Iran is the world’s largest producer of pistachios in the worldwide and has global reputation in producing products including dates, raisins, and other dried fruits, as well as varieties of wheat and barley, Hosseini emphasized.

Iran’s progress in producing cost-effective agricultural machinery- including drip irrigation systems and small-scale agricultural equipment – could play an effective role in modernizing Uganda’s agricultural sector and developing sustainable agriculture in the country.

A 10-member Ugandan delegation headed by Henry Nakelet Opolot, the country’s Commissioner for Animal Health, participated in the meeting.
