Constantinos Kombos wrote in a post on his X account that he had held a telephone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghch earlier on Friday.
The Cypriot foreign minister also wrote that the telephone conversation comes as Cyprus prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of the 2026.
He further asserted that they had discussed bilateral and regional issues in the call.
According to the readout of the talks published by the Iranian foreign ministry, Araghchi pointed to Iran’s principled approach to respecting the national sovereignty of all countries, including Cyprus, recalling the necessity of respecting the fundamentals of the United Nations Charter, especially national sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries, and emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran absolutely rejects and considers any interventionist stance regarding its territorial integrity as unacceptable.
Cypriot Foreign Minister Kombos, for his part, emphasized the importance of his country’s long-standing relations with Iran and stated that Cyprus always considers itself bound to respect the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, including Iran.
Referring to the start of Cyprus’s rotating presidency of the EU Council from the beginning of 2026, he expressed hope that this country could play a positive role in advancing relations between the bloc and Iran.
In the telephone conversation, views were also exchanged on Iran-Cyprus bilateral relations and international developments.
