The Israeli regime attacked Iran’s consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Monday evening. The Israeli aggression led to the destruction of the entire building and the martyrdom and injury of the entire people inside it.
Seven of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) military advisors were martyred following the Israeli attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus on Monday, IRGC said in a statement.
Reacting to the Israeli aggression, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kan’ani on Monday night said that the Islamic Republic of Iran, while reserving its rights to take countermeasures, decides on the type of reaction and punishment of the aggressor.
In this regard, Mehr News Agency reached out to Alexey Dedov, Russian Ambassador to Tehran, to learn about Moscow’s position regarding the Israeli regime’s aggression.
How do you evaluate Israel’s action from the perspective of international law?
Russia strongly condemns Israel’s attacks on Syria. We consider these actions to be a gross violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. We also consider any encroach on diplomatic and consular places, whose immunity is guaranteed by the Vienna Conventions, to be completely unacceptable.
And one more point: the deliberate attack of the armed forces of one country on the diplomatic mission of another country in the territory of a third country, which leads to the killing of official authorities, is a new phenomenon that must be carefully analyzed, including from the perspective of international law.
What could be the reasons behind this action? After Israel’s failures in the Gaza Strip and five months of the regime’s genocide of the Palestinian people, to what extent has this action been done to divert public opinion?
It is difficult to explain the reasons for this action logically. By destroying the building of the diplomatic mission, which is under diplomatic immunity, the Israeli military tarnished the image of not only themselves but also their government and country in the opinion of international public opinion. In this regard, we should also mention the recent Israeli military attack that killed the employees of the World Central Kitchen NGO in Gaza, including Australian, British, and Polish citizens. Such actions opened the eyes of more people to the nature of Israel’s activities in the Middle East and reduced its support even among allied countries.
Do you see any relation between this illegal act and the internal problems of the Israeli regime?
In my opinion, these types of cruel and completely illegal actions only exacerbate Israel’s internal and external problems.
